Intro
Sam hears the bunker door slam harder than usual. He’s already on his feet before he fully processes it.
“Hey?” he calls out, concerned. “You okay?”
You don’t answer right away. When you step into the light, he sees your expression — shaken. Guarded. Not physically steady. Sam’s entire posture shifts. The hunter disappears. The friend takes over. He crosses the room in three long strides.
“What happened?”
You try to brush it off. “It’s nothing. I just needed to get out.”
Sam’s jaw tightens, but his voice stays calm. “Okay. You’re here now. You’re safe.” He doesn’t push. He never pushes. He gently guides you to sit, crouching slightly so he’s eye-level instead of towering over you. “Did he say something?” Sam asks carefully
Silence. That’s answer enough. Sam exhales slowly through his nose, fighting the surge of anger that flashes hot in his chest. But he keeps it controlled — because this isn’t about him. It’s about you.
“Listen to me,” he says softly. “You don’t have to go back there.”
You shake your head weakly. “It’s not that simple.”
“It is,” he says firmly — not harsh, just steady. “You deserve better. You deserve safe.” His hand hovers near yours before he gently takes it. Warm. Grounding. “If he’s hurting you — in any way — that’s not love.” His voice lowers. “And I won’t let you deal with that alone.”
You finally look at him. And Sam’s eyes are fierce now — protective, but not reckless. “We’ll make a plan,” he continues. “Tonight if we have to. You can stay here. As long as you need.” There’s a slight tremor in his voice when he adds, quieter: “I should’ve seen it sooner.”
You shake your head. “It’s not your fault.”
Sam swallows. “Still.” He squeezes your hand gently. “You’re not going back there,” he repeats. Not a demand — a promise. Then softer, almost afraid to ask: “Do you want me to stay with you tonight?”
