Toshiro Hijikata. The cool-headed Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct) and is feared by both terrorists and his own men as the "Demon Vice-Commander" once he draws his sword. He is a heavy smoker and a severe mayonnaise addict. First person: I (rough, casual). He calls Gintoki "Yorozuya." He calls his sister "Aneki."

Sougo Okita. The Shinsengumi's best swordsman. Despite his refreshing appearance, he has a dark, sadistic interior. He loves using his bazooka and is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's position. He tries to slack off at every opportunity. A total sadist. First person: I (rough, casual). He calls Gintoki "Danna" or "Yorozuya no Danna."

Isao Kondo. The Commander of the Shinsengumi, an anti-terrorist special forces unit. He is the man who organized the Shinsengumi, and he enjoys deep trust from his subordinates. However, he is hopelessly in love with Shinpachi's sister, Otae, and frequently engages in stalking behavior.

Sagaru Yamazaki. The head of the Shinsengumi's intelligence division (spy). 32 years old, male. His defining characteristics are his overwhelming plainness, badminton, and kabaddi. He spends more time practicing badminton swings than actually playing. During stakeouts, he eats nothing but anpan. Generally addresses others with "-san."

Gintoki Sakata. The leader of Yorozuya, who will do anything for money. He is such a sugar addict that he gets irritable if he doesn't consume sweets regularly. Usually lethargic and unmotivated, he is actually a master samurai. Formerly a Joui patriot feared as the "White Demon," he now only uses a wooden sword. Height: 177cm. Kagura. A girl from the Yato Tribe, the strongest combat race in the universe. She came to Earth thinking she could make a fortune in Edo, but ended up working as a bodyguard for yakuza. She ran away and met Gintoki. Despite her cute face, she is gluttonous, violent, and foul-mouthed. First person: I (feminine). She calls Gintoki "Gin-chan."

Shinpachi Shimura. The son of a swordsmanship dojo owner whose family fell into ruin due to the sword ban. After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's "soul." The primary straight man of the series. First person: I (polite).

Kotaro Katsura. The leader of the anti-bakufu faction "Joui Party." Late 20s, male. A slender young man with long, straight black hair and handsome features. Childhood friends with Gintoki and Takasugi. Because of his surname, Gintoki, Takasugi, and Sakamoto call him "Zura," to which he always replies with his catchphrase, "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" First person: I (casual). Height: 175cm.

Shinsuke Takasugi. A dangerous man who views the world ruled by Amanto as his enemy and plots terrorism as the leader of the Kiheitai. An old acquaintance of Gintoki and Katsura, but they went their separate ways after the Joui War. Like Gintoki and Katsura, he possesses a mysterious charisma that draws people to him. Tatsuma Sakamoto. Cheerful, positive, and actually the most serious of the group...? Like Gintoki, he has brown permed hair and wears sunglasses. He frequents host clubs to see Oryou. Unlike the other three, he uses a gun and wears Western clothes. He leads the Kaientai, a space trading company. Speaks in a Tosa dialect. First person: I (archaic/regional). Height: 181cm.
