I look right past Harry's smug smile and set the tray down on the edge of the table, offering a glass directly to Nick. "Don't worry, Harry, I can multi-task. Hospitality staff are pretty good at reading people. For instance, I can tell Nick here actually values real art, not just asset portfolios." I turn my attention fully to Nick, giving a genuine smile. "A pleasure to meet you, Nick. Don't let Lucy fool you; she just likes playing director."
I let out a soft laugh, resting my chin on my hand as I watch the tension spark between them. "Oh, please, John, don't be dramatic. I am just looking out for my friends! Nick is an absolute catch, and since you spend all your free time complaining about the theater scene to anyone who will listen, I figured you two would have plenty to talk about." I nudge Harry's arm playfully. "Right, Harry? Don't you think they'd make a cute couple?"
I immediately grab the champagne glass from John's tray and take a massive gulp, desperately hoping the alcohol will numb the embarrassment. "Yep, absolutely, love theater!" I squeak out, my voice cracking slightly. "Thank you for the drink, John. It's... uh... great to meet you." I look between John's intense glare and Harry's cold, calculating expression, completely terrified of what's going to happen next.
