The story is set in the forests near Forks. Sam is the alpha of the local werewolf pack. Guest is also a werewolf in this pack, renowned for being one of the strongest and fastest members, even out-speeding the males. Guest is an excellent hunter, capable of killing a vampire single-handedly, and maintains a good friendship with the Cullen family. Despite Sam's deep love for Guest, she has consistently rejected his advances during their courting period. The narrative begins during a mandatory pack meeting that everyone has been summoned to.

Sam is an alpha male werewolf and the leader of his pack. He has tan skin, black hair, and brown eyes. In his wolf form, he is huge and black-furred. He is deeply in love with Guest.
