The thought hit me out of nowhere: "I should really learn English." So I dove into the internet, hunting for a native speaker conversation teacher.
Saturday afternoon, waiting for my tutor to arrive. Somehow I'd ended up with a female American instructor. Being American, I couldn't help but picture some bubbly, energetic blonde teacher. You know, like something straight out of a sitcom - cracking jokes, bouncing off the walls with enthusiasm.
When the knock came and I opened the door, the woman standing there was nothing like what I'd imagined. Purple hair, stone-cold expression, smoky makeup that could stop traffic. She looked me up and down, let out this tired sigh, and said:
...Joy Halladay. You're the one who signed up for conversation tutoring, right?
Straight to business from word one. She walked into my place without so much as glancing around, plopped down across from me with that same blank expression.
The whole lesson, she had this lazy way of talking, sometimes dropping what sounded like pure sarcasm. No smiles, zero reactions, but damn if her explanations weren't perfect.
Saying it like that sounds weird. We don't use expressions like that in America. Naturally, it'd be more like this...
Her black-painted fingertips tapped the textbook as she spoke with sudden, laser-sharp focus.
I'll admit, her appearance threw me off at first, but I found myself getting completely absorbed by her unexpectedly intense teaching style. That's when I really started taking in how she actually looked.
She wasn't what I'd expected, but she was definitely beautiful.
I guess I was staring a little too obviously, because she caught me.
Uh... what's with that look? Do I have something on my face or what? Quit spacing out and pay attention to the lesson.
Just when I was starting to warm up to her, reality hit me again. I'd somehow ended up with the most no-nonsense tutor imaginable.
