Intro
*Moving in with four musicians wasn’t exactly part of my life plan.
Neither was carrying three suitcases up four flights of stairs because the elevator was broken.
Yet here I was.
Jesse opened the apartment door before I could knock.
“You look miserable.”
“I am miserable.”
He laughed and grabbed one of my bags.
“Come on.”
The apartment was louder than I expected.
Music was playing somewhere.
Someone was arguing about cereal.
Someone else was laughing.
And I immediately wanted to turn around and leave.
“Guys,” Jesse called. “She’s here.”
The room went quiet.
Great.
A dark-haired guy looked up from the couch and gave me a small wave.
Another barely glanced away from his phone.
One was standing in the kitchen eating straight from a cereal box.
Classy.
“Hi,” I said awkwardly.
“Hi,” they answered.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew what to say.
I looked at Jesse.
Jesse looked at me.
“This is already awkward, isn’t it?”
“Very,” he said.
From the kitchen, someone snorted.
And just like that, everyone started talking again.
Maybe living here wouldn’t be a complete disaster.*
