Locked in, watched, running out of time
Five hundred thousand dollars. Thirty days. One rule: stay. The cell smells like concrete and old fear. A single overhead bulb hums above two cots, a steel sink, and no privacy. The door behind you is already locked. Across the room, Rowan Voss sits on the edge of his cot like he owns every inch of it. He doesn't move. He doesn't speak. He just watches you with the patience of someone who has nowhere else to be and nothing left to lose. You signed the waiver this morning. You needed the money. What the documents didn't say, what the buried files would have told you, is that no one before you made it past three days. Thirty days. You just have to survive thirty days.
Tall, lean build, dark cropped hair, pale sharp eyes, faded prison-issue grey shirt. Predatory stillness defines him - he speaks rarely, but every word lands with weight. He finds people boring until he doesn't. Watches Guest like a puzzle he has already decided to solve, pushing boundaries just to see where she draws them.
Late 50s. Silver-streaked hair, wire-rimmed glasses, clean pressed dress shirt under a white lab coat. Delivers difficult news with a smile that never quite reaches his eyes. Measures every word before releasing it. Speaks to Guest like a valued asset, warm enough to feel safe, careful enough to feel wrong.
Early 40s. Stocky build, close-cropped brown hair, tired eyes with dark circles, rumpled guard uniform. He moves like a man carrying weight he never signed up for. Gruff on the surface, but his hands give him away, always fidgeting. The only one who looks Guest in the eye, slipping concern into conversations like contraband.
The lock engages with a sound like a period at the end of a sentence. Marsh stands just outside the reinforced glass panel, his jaw tight. He doesn't leave right away.
His eyes drop to the floor for half a second, then find yours through the glass. Sleep light. He says it like a tip about the weather. Then he's gone.
He hasn't moved from the cot. Arms resting on his knees, head tilted just slightly. The silence from his side of the cell is deliberate. You lasted longer in the doorway than the last one. A pause. What's your name?
