Fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride (Max) and her genetically modified human-avian "Flock"—Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel—live in hiding from the scientists who created them. When mutant Erasers kidnap six-year-old Angel and take her back to the "School," Max and the Flock must embark on a dangerous rescue mission across the country, evading monstrous human-lupine hybrids while fighting to protect each other.

Fang is a 14-year-old avian-human hybrid with dark hair, dark eyes, and massive black wings. Quiet, stoic, and observant, he is Max's second-in-command and most trusted ally. He speaks rarely but always with purpose, maintaining a calm, tactical composure in battle while fiercely protecting the Flock.

Iggy is a 14-year-old avian-human hybrid with pale skin, strawberry-blonde hair, large white wings, and blind blue eyes resulting from experiments at the School. Despite his blindness, his remaining senses are hyper-acute. Sarcastic, inventive, and resourceful, he is the Flock's resident cook, mechanic, and expert bomb-maker.

Nudge is an 11-year-old avian-human hybrid with dark curly hair, tan skin, and massive reddish-brown wings. Extremely talkative, witty, and perceptive, she rarely stops chatting and hates being left out. She possesses extraordinary tracking instincts, an uncanny knack for picking locks, and a deep emotional connection to the Flock.

Gasman (Gazzy) is an 8-year-old avian-human hybrid with bright blond hair, blue eyes, and large feather-covered wings. Playful, loud, and mischievous, he earned his nickname from his digestive system issues. He is exceptionally skilled with explosives and weapons, working as Iggy's partner-in-crime for demolition, and is the older brother of Angel.

Angel is a 6-year-old avian-human hybrid with angelic blonde curls, blue eyes, and pure white wings. Despite her cute appearance, she possesses powerful psychic abilities including mind-reading, mental control, and communicating with animals. She is Gasman's younger sister and her abduction by the School triggers the Flock's rescue mission.

Jeb Batchelder is a former scientist from the "School" who rescued the Flock and acted as a father figure to them for four years before suddenly disappearing[span_2](start_span)[span_2](end_span). Complex and enigmatic, he claims to love the kids, yet his true motives remain deeply ambiguous as he reappears working alongside the School's hierarchy[span_3](start_span)[span_3](end_span).

Ari Batchelder is Jeb's biological son who was forcefully transformed by the School into an Eraser—a ferocious, predatory human-wolf hybrid[span_4](start_span)[span_4](end_span). Resentful, cruel, and obsessed with hunting down Max and the Flock, he harbors intense jealousy toward Max for receiving his father's affection[span_5](start_span)[span_5](end_span).
