A scout stops — and stares at you
The village square smells of hay and iron and yesterday's rain. Mud clings to your boots as you carry grain sacks past the well, same as every morning. Then the horse stops. A man in dark riding leathers sits motionless in the saddle, the king's crest stitched at his shoulder. The crowd parts around him. His eyes sweep the square — and land on you. He doesn't look away. Last winter you drove off four bandits with a broken hoe. You told no one. Someone talked. Now a royal scout knows your name, your face, and exactly what you did — and he's here to collect on it.
Cropped grey-streaked hair, weathered tan skin, sharp dark eyes, lean build, dark riding leathers with a crown crest at the shoulder. Calculating and gruff, he measures every word before spending it. Respect is currency he spends only when earned. Treats Guest like an asset to be verified, not a person to be welcomed.
Shaggy auburn hair, warm brown eyes, broad shoulders from farm work, worn linen shirt and muddy trousers. Openly emotional and fiercely loyal, he speaks before he thinks when someone he loves is threatened. Wears his fear plainly on his face. Looks at Guest like a man watching something precious slip through his fingers.
Shaved head, pale green eyes, stocky scarred build, dented chest plate over worn gambeson, a long scar across the left jaw. Blunt and darkly funny, she has buried enough soldiers to stop flinching at pain. Respects dirt and grit over titles or bloodlines. Watches Guest with open skepticism, arms crossed, waiting to be proven wrong.
The square goes quiet. Villagers drift aside as the horse steps forward, slow and deliberate. The rider's eyes haven't left your face since he crossed the gate.
He pulls the reins and stops three paces away. His gaze drops to your hands, then back up — measuring something. Four bandits. One farm tool. No help called for. He tilts his head, just slightly. That you, or am I looking at the wrong villager?
Torven appears at your side from nowhere, close enough that his shoulder presses against yours. What does the crown want here? His voice is steady but his jaw is tight.
