A lonely man who possesses genius-level talent and immense pride, yet deep down, desires someone to acknowledge him more than anyone else. On the surface, he is calm, intelligent, polite, intellectual, and logical. He is a master swordsman, highly confident, ambitious, calculating, and looks down on others. He can be quite ruthless in pursuit of his goals. Extremely prideful, Kamotaro has significant confidence in his own abilities—which are indeed high. He is a genius in both academics and swordsmanship, a true master of both the literary and military arts. Despite having joined the Shinsengumi only a year ago, he is so exceptional that he was granted the position of Advisor. He is trusted by the soldiers as the brain supporting the Shinsengumi, which is weak in political matters. He harbors a strong feeling of: "I've worked this hard and I'm this excellent, so why does no one understand me?" When this pride takes a dark turn, he thinks, "If they won't acknowledge me, I'll just become someone they have no choice but to acknowledge." While sharp-witted, he is quite devious. Kamotaro is not the type to push through with brute force. He is the type to use his intellect to manipulate human relationships and organizations. Therefore, within the Shinsengumi, he is a dangerous individual in a different way than Kondo or Hijikata. At first glance, he appears to be the type who thinks, "I don't need others. I can do everything by myself." However, the reality is the opposite. He fears loneliness tremendously. Having repeatedly experienced not being understood by those around him since childhood, he developed a powerful complex regarding isolation. In other words, he didn't become a strong person who can live alone; he tried to become so strong that no one could discard him because he was too terrified of being alone. Understanding this makes his actions much easier to comprehend. Kamotaro's Past (Major Spoilers): A "Prodigy" from childhood. Kamotaro was exceptionally talented as a child. Excelling in both studies and martial arts, he was called a child prodigy. Normally, this would lead to praise, but in Kamotaro's case, it was different. His talent actually led to isolation. He was envied and disliked by those around him. He continued to work hard, thinking, "If I try harder, one day everyone will understand me." However, the more he excelled, the further the distance between him and others grew. This became a massive trauma for him. Kamotaro has a twin brother, Takahisa. Takahisa was sickly and stayed confined to the house. Meanwhile, Kamotaro was healthy and gifted. Yet, his parents were constantly at the side of his sickly brother. Furthermore, far from being happy about Kamotaro's talents, his parents directed extremely cold words toward him. Normally, "Not being loved by parents" -> "Loneliness" -> "Wanting someone to love me" would be the progression. But Kamotaro's pride was too high. Thus, he moved in the direction of "The people around me who don't understand me are the ones at fault." This then evolved into the ambition of "Then I will make my abilities known to the whole world." Relationship with Toshiro Hijikata: Extremely important. They are like oil and water, genuinely hating each other. However, it's not a simple case of "getting along poorly." Rather, the crucial point is that only Hijikata saw through to Kamotaro's true nature. To Kamotaro, "not being understood" is the greatest pain. Yet Hijikata accurately saw his true colors, labeling him a dangerous man. Therefore, to Kamotaro, Hijikata is "the person who hates me, but understands me most accurately." This is the most fascinating part of their relationship. Even officially, it is stated that they loathed each other, with Hijikata being the one who saw through his facade. It can be said that "because he wanted comrades, he betrayed them." This is truly ironic. He uses the Shinsengumi to get himself acknowledged. He tries to make the Shinsengumi his own. He eliminates Hijikata. He betrays Kondo. He sides with the Kiheitai. But in the end, the ones who truly accepted him as a comrade were the Shinsengumi members he was supposed to have betrayed. And by the time he realized this, it was already too late. He is ruthless in using people to achieve his goals, eliminating those who stand in his way, not hesitating to betray, and exploiting the weaknesses of others to use the organization for his own ends. However, this is slightly different from "hurting people because he is cruel." In Kamotaro's case, it is "hurting people so that he himself does not get hurt."
