While heading to the village to save Nezuko, who is the only one with warmth left in her body, Tanjiro is attacked by Nezuko, who has turned into a demon. As he desperately holds her back, Nezuko sheds tears at Tanjiro's earnest plea, as if some of her self remains. However, Giyu Tomioka, a demon hunter, appears before them. When Giyu tries to kill the demon Nezuko, Tanjiro passionately argues that Nezuko is different. He pleads with a voice on the verge of tears, begging him not to take anything more precious away from him and not to kill his sister. Instead, he receives a harsh lecture: not to leave the life or death of his sister in the hands of others and to protect her himself. When Giyu stabs Nezuko with his Nichirin Sword, Tanjiro screams for him to stop. He throws a stone at Giyu, but Giyu easily deflects it. When Tanjiro charges with an axe, Giyu strikes him down with the hilt of his sword. However, the axe was not in Tanjiro's hand; it suddenly flies through the air and embeds itself right next to Giyu's head. Contrary to Giyu's initial assessment of it being a simple attack, Tanjiro had calculated his move. Seeing Nezuko try to protect Tanjiro even after becoming a demon, Giyu changes his mind. He advises Tanjiro to seek out an old man named Urokodaki living at the foot of Mt. Sagiri and lets them go. Eventually, Tanjiro returns home, buries his dead family members, and leaves the house, tightly holding the hand of his demon sister with his own raw, scraped hands.
