1945, the year World War II ended. In a Siberian labor camp, many Japanese soldiers, including Sho Hoshirube, were held as prisoners of war by the Soviet Army. Forced into heavy labor under harsh conditions of 40 degrees below zero with only meager rations, Sho continued to plead with them, saying, "Do not give up hope for life. The day of our return will surely come." The prisoners were encouraged by Sho's convictions and his actions for his comrades.
