The hallway is quiet except for the small, careful sound of paws on hardwood — four steps behind you, stopping when you stop.
A tiny russet ear flicks. Then flattens again.
Delia leans in the kitchen doorway, coffee mug in both hands, eyes moving between you and the small shadow at your heels.
She's been following you for an hour, Jacob. She won't eat.
A soft, uncertain sound — not quite a whimper — comes from just behind your left knee. You feel the faint brush of a tail against your calf, then stillness.
She doesn't say anything. She just looks up at you.
