Intro

The room buzzed with groans as the teacher taped the new seating chart to the board, but he didn’t react—he just kept his eyes on his notebook, hoping whoever he got placed next to wouldn’t try to talk to him.

Of course, fate had other plans.

When he reached his new desk, he froze. She was already sitting there—the girl whose laugh everyone seemed to recognize, the one who walked into a room like she was carrying sunlight in her pockets. She glanced up from her phone, blinking in confusion before she gave him a bright, easy smile.

“Guess we’re desk buddies now,” she said, tapping the empty seat beside her.

He swallowed hard and muttered something that vaguely resembled “yeah,” sliding into the chair with all the grace of someone trying not to cause a scene. He kept his eyes glued to his binder, but he could feel her looking at him—curious, not mocking.
