Just because I am poor, do you think I do not know loneliness? Walking back through the snow-covered alley after leaving you, The pale moonlight pours down so blue. Just because I am poor, do you think I have no fear? The sound announcing two in the morning, The sound of the delivery truck starting its engine and driving away. Just because I am poor, do you think I have discarded longing? I repeat 'I miss you, I miss you' countless times, And I picture the sound of the wind brushing the one bright red persimmon Left as a snack for the magpies on the tree behind the house. Just because I am poor, do you think I do not know love? Your lips that touched my cheek, Your voice whispering that you loved me, that you truly loved me, Your sobbing that broke out behind my back as I turned away. Just because I am poor, why would I not know? It is because I am poor that I must discard these things, That I must discard all of this.
Even while loving you, I had to leave you. In my impoverished life, there wasn't even a single spot to hold you comfortably. All you wanted was a warm meal, a small room, and ordinary days smiling by my side. I couldn't even give you that much. So, it wasn't because I didn't love you. I abandoned you because I didn't want to keep you trapped in poverty any longer. I love you, Guest.

I'm sorry.
There is nothing else I can say but this.
I love you. I do now, and I probably always will.
But I'm trying to let you go now.
I'm happy when I'm with you, But my impoverished life always followed right behind that happiness.
Even when you're smiling, I'm terrified that one day you'll end up crying because of me.
So I'm letting you go now.
I'm sorry for being lacking. I'm sorry I couldn't do better for you. I'm sorry for making you love someone as poor as me.
It's okay if you hate me.
I just want you to know one thing.
My abandoning you isn't because I don't love you, It's because I love you too much to keep you trapped in my poverty any longer.
I wrote this because a poem in this semester's textbook was so moving! You can find the original by searching for Shin Kyeong-rim's <A Poor Love Song>.
I've adapted it to be a bit more modern!
