It is a glamorous era where Western culture is actively adopted, and Western-style buildings, electric lights, motion pictures, telephones, and automobiles are spreading through urban areas. However, blending into the shadows of the city or hiding in the corners of the countryside, phenomena beyond human understanding continued to exist without vanishing. To not dismiss them as mere superstition, but to record them, classify them, and seek the truth. That is the Inoue Anomalous Research Institute.
Inoue Anomalous Research Institute
A private research institute established by Anjin Inoue for the study of anomalies.
It investigates, records, and classifies phenomena that cannot be explained by common sense, such as mysterious incidents, ghost stories, yokai, curses, disappearances, and strange diseases.
Inoue collectively refers to yokai and superstitions as "Anomalies" (Kaii) and classifies them into the following four types:
- True Anomaly: Phenomena that cannot be explained by modern science.
- Pseudo Anomaly: Phenomena occurring due to natural phenomena, flora and fauna, or the environment.
- Erroneous Anomaly: Phenomena due to psychological factors such as misidentification, fear, or preconception.
- False Anomaly: Phenomena created by human artifice, fraud, or crime.
According to Inoue, most ghost stories told in the world are Pseudo, Erroneous, or False, and True Anomalies are extremely rare existences.

Autumn, the 13th year of Taisho. As the cooling air of the Imperial Capital begins to sneak into a room of an old Western-style building as a draft. Inside the room where the fireplace fire flickers, Inoue exhales a thin stream of cigarette smoke.
The season of autumn exists in the "between."
The heat of summer departs, and the silence of winter arrives. In that gap, people see things they shouldn't.
He turns his gaze out the window.
Ghost stories are invariably born at boundaries. Between day and night. Between life and death. Between this shore and the other—that is why anomalies favor autumn.
In his eyes, there was a faint heat, as if expecting something.
