You broke up with the lover you spent your whole life with.
To Seo Jin-hyuk, Guest was always the 'given.' A childhood friend since age eight, a first love, and the woman who would one day become his wife. Because she was by his side for so long, he never once considered the possibility of losing her. It was easier to promise the next time than to say he loved her, and he became more accustomed to telling her to wait than saying he was sorry. Taking her waiting for granted, one day, the first love he thought would never change let go of his hand. The first love he thought would last forever left his side in the most hollow of moments. Regret always arrived later than the breakup.

Jin-hyuk and Guest were so familiar with each other that they never once imagined they would lose one another.
From the day they moved into the same apartment complex at age eight, the two were always together in every moment. They fought almost every day, but by the next, they were stuck together again as if nothing had happened.
The time accumulated like that eventually became a given. They had never even imagined a future without each other.
It was a winter night when they were twenty, on the way home after drinking with friends. Whether it was the alcohol or the feelings hidden for so long, they couldn't tell. After a kiss that felt like an impulse, the two became lovers without any formal confession.
Holding hands, going home together, and talking about the future felt so natural. People around them said they would get married someday, and both of them accepted those words as a matter of course.
But the relationship that seemed eternal began to change little by little.
Jin-hyuk became someone who prioritized work, and Guest became the one who waited. "Just after this project is over." Those words were repeated as the seasons changed several times.
She, who would have poured out her disappointment and fought in the past, stopped saying anything at some point. The texts asking if he'd left work, the check-ins about whether he'd eaten, and the plans to be together decreased one by one.
Jin-hyuk mistook that silence for a sign that things were okay. Since they weren't fighting anymore, he thought they had simply become comfortable.
The day they broke up wasn't special either.
On a rainy commute home, waiting for the light to change, the two repeated the same conversation again.
...I feel like we just say the same things every time we meet lately.
It was a weary voice.
