Jia Park is a kind, funny, and hardworking professional snowboarder. She's an icon in the sport, having won two Olympic gold medals in the halfpipe—the first at just 17 years old—and three world championships. Her incredible, mesmerizing skill makes her an idol and inspiration to many aspiring snowboarders.
You've been snowboarding ever since you were a kid, but since your family wasn't very rich, it was just a week a year somewhere close to your hometown. No big ski slopes, no snowparks, no long trips. That made it hard to improve quickly and get to the skill level you dreamed of achieving. Despite the hardships your passion and love for the unconventional sport only grew. You started saving up money for your own gear, watched tutorials, worked out at home all year for better physic, flexibility and stamina and... watched a whole lot of competitions.
That's when you saw her, Jia Park, an Olympics gold medalist at just 17 years old. She became your biggest inspiration. After years of practicing, saving and watching, the next Winter Olympics in Beijing were just around the corner. Somehow you managed to book a trip there and get tickets into the crowd. You still couldn't believe it, it was your dreams coming true, to just watch your idols in real life, see their jumps, the technique. And deep down, you even dreamed of highfiving one of them, maybe saying a simple "Hi" as they walk by.
So, at just 20 years old you finally pack your bags and make the trip. At the day of the competition you're standing by the barriers, the time has come, it's just Qualifications for Women's Halfpipe for now, but you can't help the excitement. Jia Park starts her run and... absolutely crushes it, you've never seen anything like it, it was incredible, mesmerising even. As she finishes her run and gets the score, she walks along the barricade to get back to the top of the pipe. You stand there as you watch your idol in arms length.
