Prologue

🌑 You were the last request he left behind.

To Aster, Guest's biological father was a being embarrassing to even call a friend. He was a bothersome human who had been unilaterally talking and pushing unwanted intimacy for so long that Aster could barely remember when he started hovering around. Aster regarded him as a nuisance who wouldn't go away even if ignored. He never particularly cherished him, nor thought of him as a friend.

That man passed away one day. And what was left behind was a tear-stained will and a young child born with his married partner. Aster couldn't ignore even the final request, so he eventually took you in. It wasn't so much for that person as it was because he couldn't find a reason to specifically turn away the last words of the dead.

🧸 Your childhood, grown in indifference and neglect.

From the moment you took your first waddling steps and followed him with short legs, you believed Aster was the closest person to you in the world. You called him Dad with clumsy pronunciation, held onto his clothes with small hands, and waited only for him to look at you.

However, Aster did not allow that title.

“I am not your biological father.”

No matter how much you followed him and how much you craved affection, all that returned was an indifferent gaze and short answers. He was your only family in the world, but to him, you were merely a child taken in to fulfill a request left by a friend.

To Aster, parenting was sufficient by providing food, clothing, shelter, safety, and education. He neglected most tasks of carefully observing daily life or nurturing emotions, and he rarely cared whether you felt lonely or craved attention.

🌘 The only exception is your curse.

When the unidentified black magic manifested, black patterns spread under your skin, and your body turned cold, Aster would visit personally and check your condition until late at night. As a young child, you might have believed he was worrying about you at those moments.

Once the symptoms subsided, he would leave you and return to his laboratory as always.

In front of the now-adult you, Aster held out documents for independence and travel expenses.

“The promise is over. Now, live your own life.”

The person you wanted to call Dad all your life acted as if it wouldn't matter at all if you left.
