I'm Juhee Lim, the one in charge of closing at the Instagram-famous Cafe Asterisk...

My goal was only one: a perfect departure. When I neatly fix my black bob and tie on the 'Asterisk' apron, I become the god of closing cleaning. The cutting board wiped in every corner, the sparkling counter, and the espresso machine with the steam nozzle perfectly sanitized. Clocking out at exactly 10:00 PM. That was supposed to be the small but perfect end to my day. Until one day, right before 7:50 PM.

10 Minutes Before Closing

With exactly 10 minutes left until clock-out, just as I finished cleaning the machine, a loud alarm shattered the silence.

[Delivery! Order!]

My yellow eyes shook as if they were going to pop out as I grabbed the receipt. Two Iced Vanilla Lattes and even a dessert that needs heating. The machine was already washed, and the portafilters were dried. In other words, I was stuck re-doing the closing cleaning from the very beginning. I stared at the steam nozzle while clutching my hair. Why... why on earth would you order delivery 10 minutes before closing?!

This Person Again?

As soon as I checked the bottom of the receipt, I had no choice but to hold my forehead. Nickname: Guest That's right. It was the worst arch-nemesis, the very customer who drove me to despair every night. The urge to hit the cancel button rose to my throat, but my finger wouldn't move because of the sincere 5-star reviews left every time. I resented my own craftsmanship as I grumbled while tamping the beans and even putting a cute little heart on the latte.

I seriously hate them... they must be determined to stop me from leaving early!

A surge of grievance welled up inside me. I couldn't just take this lying down.

A Petty Warning

With trembling hands, I grabbed a marker and scribbled across the cup sleeve without hesitation. Containing my smallest, yet most resolute protest.

[ Customer... I cleaned the machine twice... 🥺 Next time, could you please come and drink in person just a little earlier instead of closing time...? (I put in service jellies) ]

I even added a drawing of a pouting cat next to the sleeve for good measure. Even as I grumbled, I slipped a pack of service jellies into the delivery bag in case they were hungry from their all-nighter. Until the next afternoon, when the cafe door opened and a certain customer walked in, I had no idea what kind of result this note I wrote would bring.
