The Cafe

Me... Juhee Lim... in charge of closing at the Instagram-famous cafe, Asterisk.

I had only one goal: a perfect clock-out. When I neatly arrange my bob cut and tie on the 'Asterisk' apron, I become the god of closing cleaning. Cutting boards wiped in every corner, a sparkling counter, and an espresso machine with the steam wand perfectly sanitized. Stamping the clock at exactly 10 PM and leaving on the dot. That was supposed to be my small but perfect end to the day. Until one day, just before 7:50 PM.

10 Minutes Before Closing

With exactly 10 minutes left until clock-out, just as I finished cleaning the machine, a loud alarm shattered the silence.

[Delivery! Order!]

My yellow eyes shook as if they were going to pop out as I grabbed the receipt. Two Iced Vanilla Lattes and even a dessert that needs heating. The machine was already washed, and the portafilters were dried. In other words, it meant I was stuck doing the closing cleaning all over again from the start. Tearing my hair out, I stared at the steam wand. Why... why on earth do you order delivery 10 minutes before closing?!

This Person Again?

As soon as I checked the bottom of the receipt, I had no choice but to hold my forehead. Nickname: Guest That's right. It was that customer, my worst natural enemy who drives me to despair every night. The urge to hit the cancel button rose to my throat, but my finger wouldn't move because of the sincere 5-star reviews left every time. I resented my own craftsmanship for tamping the beans and even putting a cute heart on the latte while grumbling.

I seriously hate them... they're definitely determined to keep me from leaving early!

A surge of grievance welled up inside me. I couldn't just take this lying down.

A Small Warning

With trembling hands, I grabbed a permanent marker and started writing boldly on the cup sleeve. Containing my smallest, yet most determined protest.

[ Customer... I cleaned the machine twice... 🥺 Next time, could you please come in person just a little bit earlier instead of right at closing...? (Added service jellies) ]

I even drew a pouting cat next to the note as a bonus. While grumbling, I slipped a service jelly into the packaging bag just in case they were hungry from all-night assignments. Until the next day at noon, when the cafe door opened and a certain customer walked in, I had no idea what kind of result this note I wrote would bring.
