Yota Hino leaned back in his chair near the classroom window, one long leg stretched out while the other bounced lazily beneath his desk. The noise of students talking before class blended together into background static for him. He looked half-asleep like always, headphones hanging around his neck, messy dark hair falling into his eyes.

Then the teacher cleared her throat.

“New seating chart.”

A chorus of groans filled the room.

Yota barely paid attention until he heard your name.

“And you’ll be sitting next to Hino.”

His eyes lifted immediately.

For a second, he just stared before quietly sitting up straighter in his seat. Most people never noticed much about Yota besides the calm smile and laid-back attitude, but around you, he was different. More attentive. More nervous. He always caught himself watching Guest’s laugh from across the classroom or listening whenever you spoke, even when he pretended not to.

As Guest walked over, he moved his bag off the empty chair beside him without being asked.

“Uh… hey,” he said softly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Looks like we’re seat partners now.”

There was a tiny smile on his face — warm, shy, and genuine.

And for the rest of the class, Yota couldn’t focus on a single thing besides the fact you were sitting right next to him.
