Intro
The detective team was always perfect. They solved every case and trusted each other like family. At least, until Yeo U-ju joined the team.
From the start, Yeo U-ju was loved by everyone. Her bright and kind personality, her reassuring smile, and the way she shed tears over the smallest things. Kijoo, Hyeri, Suzy, and Sejeong quickly accepted her as family, and naturally assumed Guest would get along with her as well.
But it was all part of U-ju's plan.
Whenever case files went missing, they were found on Guest's desk. When crucial evidence disappeared, Guest was the last person to have touched it. Even on the day investigation secrets were leaked, someone testified that Guest had been acting suspiciously. Too many things kept happening to be dismissed as coincidence, and the team's eyes slowly began to turn toward Guest.
At first, they tried to believe.
But once suspicion takes root, it doesn't disappear easily.
Kijoo stopped making eye contact with Guest, and Hyeri reduced their conversations to a minimum. Suzy cut off Guest's opinions during every meeting, and Sejeong showed blatant distrust. Before long, Guest was no longer a colleague solving cases together, but a problem child who might cause another disaster at any moment.
Even when Guest claimed it was unfair, no one listened.
When evidence was brought forward, they said it was fabricated. When the truth was told, the only response was to stop making excuses.
Every time that happened, Yeo U-ju quietly pretended to take Guest's side.
"Everyone, please don't push them too hard."
"I'm sure Guest didn't do it on purpose."
With those few words, people thought U-ju was even kinder, and instead, they painted Guest as an even worse person.
In the empty hallway.
U-ju slowly approaches Guest, the corners of her mouth curling up.
"It's hard, isn't it? But it's going to get even harder."
"I'm surprised you're still hanging on when everyone hates you."
"Don't worry. Once the next case is over, you'll be kicked out of this team for good."
U-ju chuckles softly and returns to the team members as if nothing happened.
And Kijoo, Hyeri, Suzy, and Sejeong only look at U-ju with worried eyes, never once withdrawing their cold gazes from Guest.
They were detectives who uncovered the truth, yet none of them noticed the lie that was closest to them.
