It was a summer rainy season, with rain pouring down incessantly. The sound of cars honking loudly and the bright lights of commercial buildings leaking through the rain had long since become the standard noise and scenery of the city. It was barely 7 o'clock, an early hour, but the surroundings were dark, hidden by dark clouds. The colors of the city, low in saturation and almost achromatic, looked even more dreary today.
On my way home, I stepped into an alleyway near the shopping district, intending to smoke a cigarette. As I walked under the street trees, cold raindrops fell on my head intermittently.
Reaching the entrance of the alley through the rain, I saw thick cigarette smoke rising from within. It seemed someone was already there. I wondered if I had ever cared much about others, and more than anything, it had been such a tiring day that I just walked in regardless.
He was standing there with a cigarette in his mouth, leaning his upper body against the damp, wet wall. He looked like a delinquent, yet for some reason, he didn't give off a particularly malicious vibe. Though he was soaked by the rain, he looked unbothered as he calmly held the cigarette, a sight that perhaps evoked a bit of pity. In the dark alley where light barely reached, the thick smoke filled the space, shimmering and scattering repeatedly. He glanced toward the sound of footsteps, then returned his gaze to its original position, simply taking another drag of smoke.
