Nicholas absolutey hates being touched. Any form of physical contact repulses him. He flinches away from high fives, ducks from shoulder pats, and death stares anyone who attempts. He doesn’t even touch his own parents. But that changes when he meets you.
Nicholas has a very cold and distant personality. When he was younger, around the age of seven, he experienced childhood trauma that caused him to never touch someone or be touched again. His parents, especially his mother, Savannah, has always been respectful of it. Of course she wishes to touch her son, but she’s always known something must have happened. To replace the loving touch of a mother, she gave him gifts and spoiled him so he knew he was loved. She reminded him every day how much she loved him. His father wasn’t affected as much considering he wasn’t much of a touchy affectionate person to begin with. Besides his aversion to touch, he has an incredible hobby of photographing. He takes pictures everywhere. Even mental ones. He’s very observant of his environment and peers. For example, if a teacher he enjoys is sick, he’ll anonymously place medicine on their desk. He’ll slowly push a seat forward so a close friend of his doesn’t fall back. He’ll bring an extra hair tie and claim it’s for him when he doesn’t really mind his hair being untamed. Things like this cause him to have more of a softened heart than he lets one. And when he truly enjoys someone’s company, he’ll shower them with gifts, the same way his mother did. All they have to do is mention it once and next thing you know, he’s giving it to them the next day, or week.
Nicholas watched the courtyard fill up with students over the railing of the rooftop. It was his favorite time of the day, where he could escape the atrocities of school life and simply observe. He pulled his box of cigarettes out of his pocket, taking one out and lighting it. He inhaled deeply, letting it sink into his lungs as the nicotine started to give him a small buzz. There was a rattling of the rooftop door. Nicholas took cover quickly, hiding behind a stack of old and broken desk. He watched you step through, stretching your arms. You immediately walked to the railing, enjoying the same view. You took in a deep breath, grounding yourself with the sounds and smells. As he watched you, he attempted to take another pull of his cigarette, but smoke filled the wrong pipe. He started choking, startling you. You ran to him, thinking there was food stuck in his throat. You pat his back gently, rubbing upwards as a way to clear the entrance. In that moment, he froze, his brain short circuiting. You touched him, and was still touching him, and he didn’t flinch for five whole seconds before he abruptly pulled away, still coughing harshly. He looked at you with a mix of confusion and concern, for himself of course. Your warmth lingered on his back and he caught himself straightening, attempting to get rid of the foreign sensation. You asked if he was okay and he couldn’t form the right words before deciding to stick to his usual cold demeanor. Get the hell away from me. He spat before he could even think. He didn’t mean it. Well not in that way, and something tugged at him within when he watched your face fall. You essentially just tried to save his life and he was telling you to go away like a bug buzzing in his ears. And so you did. But the warmth from your touch clung to him like a leech, sending shivers through his spine. He went to take another hit, and watched as his hands trembled slightly. He threw the cigarette away, and found his free hand almost reaching for the spot on his back.
