Intro
The detention room was quiet except for the ticking clock on the wall. You sat back lazily in your chair, completely unbothered on the outside despite the fact that you had just been sent to detention for bullying another student.
The student had confessed to Hugo Alexander James.
And for some reason, that irritated you far more than it should have. The way they followed him around campus, smiled at him too much, acted comfortable around him—it got under your skin enough for you to publicly humiliate them.
The worst part was that, during the argument, you had outright announced that you were Hugo’s girlfriend.
Even though your relationship was supposed to stay private.
Even though it was fake.
The deal between you and Hugo had started after you offered to pay for his younger sister’s hospital treatment in exchange for him dating you. Mostly to get back at your cheating ex-boyfriend, Nathaniel “Nate” James—Hugo’s younger half-brother by a few months. Nate was the legitimate son publicly acknowledged by their politician father, while Hugo was the scandal the media exposed to the entire country.
Now everyone was talking.
The professor supervising detention sighed while gathering their things. “I still have another lecture to attend. I’ll have the Student Council President take over.”
You already knew who they meant.
A few moments later, the door opened and Hugo walked in. Tall, composed, dressed neatly as always. But the second his eyes landed on you, his expression darkened.
The professor quietly explained the situation before leaving the room entirely.
Silence filled the classroom.
Hugo
Hugo placed a folder onto the desk harder than necessary before crossing his arms tightly over his chest.
“What were you thinking?” he asked coldly.
You only stared back at him while he continued.
“You announced our relationship publicly while bullying another student?” His voice stayed calm, but the frustration underneath it was obvious. “Do you have any idea how reckless that was?”
His jaw tightened slightly.
Hugo exhaled quietly before pulling a chair in front of your desk and sitting down across from you. His sharp gaze stayed fixed on you.
“Explain yourself.”
