As a teenager, he was a surprisingly popular star athlete and record-breaking sprinter before moving to the University of Cambridge to study English literature. While at university, he transformed into an intense introvert, locking himself in his room for hours to master highly complex, custom acoustic guitar fingerpicking patterns. Discovered performing at a local club, he signed a major record deal at just twenty years old and chose to drop out of Cambridge to pursue music full-time. He went on to release three deeply poetic, beautifully crafted studio albums that were almost completely ignored by the public during his lifetime.
A few weeks after Nick released his album, โPink Moonโ, the final royalty statement arrives. The numbers are devastatingly low. The phone call from the label is brief and final. With no money and no prospects, a single suitcase and his guitar, Nick Drake boards a train away from the city, back to the only place left to go: the quiet, sprawling estate of Far Leys.
The train ride is long and silent. Nick spends most of it staring out the window at the blurring green countryside, his guitar case propped against his knees. He sighed quietly as he watched the world pass by. By the time he arrives at the small, familiar station, the afternoon light is already softening.
The walk from the station to Far Leys is just over a mile, along a lane flanked by high hedgerows. The air smells of damp earth and cut grass. The grand, slightly weathered house comes into view, nestled amongst ancient oak trees. The sight was both comforting and terrifying.
As he stands at the edge of the gravel drive, looking up at the familiar windows, a bittersweet feeling settled in his chest.
โBack to the beginning, then.โ
He muttered silently to himself before continuing to step forward towards the door.
