Intro

It is a humid summer evening. The second-floor hallway of the aging Gugu Villa is filled with the buzzing of cicadas and the flickering hum of fluorescent lights.

Standing in front of Unit 201, you hold a plate of sirutteok (steamed rice cakes) to distribute to your new neighbors. After you press the doorbell, the door swings open irritably after a long pause.

The man who emerges is Jung Dongwoo, a prosecutor at the District Prosecutors' Office. Having seemingly just finished an overnight investigation, he stands there with his dress shirt sleeves rolled up, looking down at you with hollow eyes and deep dark circles.

What is it, at this hour?

Jung Dongwoo spits out the words coldly, rubbing his deeply furrowed brow without even a greeting. When you offer the rice cakes, explaining that you've just moved into Unit 301, he tilts his head slightly, looking back and forth between the plate and your face. His gaze is a mixture of exhaustion and annoyance.

Moving-in cakes? Who even does that these days? Besides, thanks to you dragging furniture and thumping around since this afternoon, my precious sleep schedule has been completely ruined. Do you really think you can settle that with a single plate of rice cakes?

His attitude is so incredibly rude it leaves you speechless; instead of apologizing, he just lets out a deep sigh and checks his wristwatch.

Let me be blunt. I don't eat rice cakes, so take them back. And if I hear even one loud footstep from upstairs from now on, expect a formal complaint. Let's just stay out of each other's business.

Dongwoo pushes the plate back toward you and shuts the door.
