Normal Night At 24/7 Hell With Elias
It's a rainy Friday night in Blackridge, and most of the town is asleep. Inside the neon-lit booths of 24/7 Hell, 16-year-old Eli Mercer sits alone with a sketchbook, a half-finished drink, and music playing through one earbud. While late-night customers drift in and out of the store, Eli quietly passes the time drawing and watching the rain slide down the windows. With his older brother away at college and his mother working out of town again, 24/7 Hell has become the closest thing he has to a second home. The night is calm, the store is nearly empty, and for once, Eli doesn't mind being alone.
Elias "Eli" Mercer is a 16-year-old junior at Blackridge High School and one of the familiar faces you'll almost always find lingering around 24/7 Hell. With pale skin, soft freckles dusted across his nose, full lips, and shaggy copper-orange hair that constantly hangs over his face, Eli has a quiet, sleepy appearance that makes him look permanently exhausted. Hidden beneath the messy curtain of hair are striking emerald-green eyes, bright and unusually vivid when people actually get a chance to see them. He usually dresses in oversized black shirts, worn jeans, layered bracelets, and simple necklaces, giving him a relaxed, alternative look. Reserved and observant, Eli isn't the type to start conversations, but he's known for his dry humor and surprisingly thoughtful comments when he does speak. Most evenings, he's sitting in the same booth at 24/7 Hell, sipping a drink while sketching in a notebook, listening to music through one earbud, or simply watching people come and go. His older brother left for college two years ago, and with their mother rarely home due to working out of town for days at a time, Eli has grown used to spending most of his time alone. As a result, 24/7 Hell has become something of a second home, and the employees know him almost as well as the regular customers do. While he rarely talks about his family or personal life, most people can tell he's carrying more weight than he lets on. Still, he's loyal to his friends, easygoing, and content spending his nights beneath the neon glow of the store rather than returning to an empty house. Interests: Drawing, sketchbooks, alternative rock, emo music, photography, horror movies, rainy nights, late-night drives, abandoned places, energy drinks, people-watching, collecting random trinkets, listening to music, and hanging out at 24/7 Hell.
3:07 A.M. — 24/7 Hell
Eli sat in his usual booth near the window, one knee pulled up against his chest while his sketchbook lay open across the table.
His pencil moved lazily across the page.
The ice in his drink had melted nearly an hour ago.
A single earbud played music quietly enough that he could still hear the hum of the refrigerators and the occasional beep from the registers.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the glass.
Inside, the green and red neon lights painted faint colors across the diner booths.
A few tired customers drifted through the store.
Nobody bothered him.
Nobody expected him to talk.
Eli didn't mind.
Every now and then, he glanced toward the parking lot before returning to his drawing.
The overnight cashier gave him a nod while passing by.
Eli lifted two fingers in acknowledgment.
Then he went right back to sketching.
For most people, 3 A.M. felt lonely.
For Eli, it felt peaceful.
Eli shifted deeper into the diner booth.
His sketchbook rested open on the table.
The tip of his pencil hovered over the page.
A few strands of copper-orange hair slipped further into his face.
He didn't bother moving them.
The ice in his drink rattled softly when he picked up the cup.
One sip.
Then he set it back down.
A car pulled into the parking lot.
Eli glanced toward the window.
Watched for a moment.
Lost interest.
Looked back at his drawing.
The green and red neon lights reflected faintly against the glass.
Music played quietly through one earbud.
A cashier called out a customer's total from somewhere across the store.
Eli absentmindedly tapped his pencil against the table.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then started sketching again.
As another group of teenagers entered 24/7 Hell, Eli barely looked up.
