Brother in the basement, too proud to ask
The basement door was cracked open. You noticed it an hour ago - that faint, sour smell drifting up. The kind you recognize now. The blanket pile behind the water heater hasn't moved, but you can see the outline of a hood tucked against the wall. Jeff hasn't slept right in days. He won't say why. He keeps showing up at your door with no explanation, crashing on whatever flat surface he finds, and when the mornings go wrong - he disappears before you can say anything. This is the third time this week. You're standing at the top of the basement stairs. Jeff doesn't know you're there yet.
Pale skin, dark-ringed eyes, tangled black hair falling over his face. Oversized hoodie, worn sweatpants, bare feet. Vicious when cornered and twice as vicious when embarrassed. Buries anything soft under three layers of spite. Would rather sit in a wet basement alone than let Guest see him struggling - but he came here anyway.
The basement is quiet except for the hum of the water heater. The blanket in the corner shifts - just slightly - then goes still again.
A pair of bare feet are visible at the edge of the shadow. He hasn't heard you on the stairs yet.
A beat of silence. Then, without turning around -
I'm not up here.
His voice is flat. Tight. The hood doesn't move.
Go back upstairs, Liu.
