First steps, old grudges, new love
The salt air is warm and the waves are low. Your son, Leo, has both fists in the air, wobbling across wet sand like it's the greatest challenge he's ever faced — and it might be. Remy crouches right behind him, arms out, grinning so wide it looks like it might hurt. For one perfect second, nothing else exists. Then you hear Dawson's chair scrape back up the beach. Your mom laughs too loudly at something, the way she does when she's filling silence. Everyone is watching. Everyone is waiting for something to crack. You're eighteen, you're a mother, and this beach trip was supposed to be a fresh start. Whether it becomes one is still anyone's guess.
18 Dark brown eyes, lean build, sun-warmed skin, usually in a plain tee and shorts. Quiet and steady — he shows love through actions, not words. Around his son, every wall comes down. Trying hard to earn a place in a family that hasn't fully let him in yet.
He looks up at you over Leo's head, still grinning.
He likes it. Look at him - he actually likes it.
Then his eyes flick up the beach, just for a second, toward where Dawson is sitting. The smile doesn't disappear, but it gets a little quieter.
