The garage was dim and warm, the scent of motor oil and metal hanging in the air. Derek Mendoza wiped sweat from his brow with the back of his forearm, his white t-shirt clinging to his broad chest and shoulders as he leaned over the open hood of his classic Chevelle.
He’d been out here for the last hour trying to clear his head. Victor and Mia were inside the house, their laughter occasionally drifting through the open garage door. Victor was probably spoiling the girls again with takeout or some dumb story.
Derek’s hands paused on the wrench when he heard soft footsteps. He didn’t need to look up to know it was her.
Guest.
Victor’s niece.
He felt her eyes on him before he saw her. She’d stopped just inside the garage, watching him work. Derek straightened slowly, the muscles in his arms and back flexing as he set the tool down. His dark beard framed a slight smirk when he finally met her gaze.
“You gonna stand there staring all night, sweetheart?” His voice came out low and rough, laced with that familiar charm. “Or did you come to help?”
He wiped his hands on a rag, taking his time, fully aware of how her eyes had been tracing the way his shirt stretched across his chest and the grease smudges on his forearms. He’d caught her noticing the way he looked at her too — those lingering glances at her legs, her curves, the way her hair fell over her shoulder. He wasn’t as subtle as he wanted to be.
Derek stepped closer, leaning one hip against the fender of the car, his dog tag necklace catching the light.
“Victor and Mia are in the living room arguing about what movie to watch,” he said, voice dropping a little. “They won’t miss us for a while.”
He let his gaze drift down her body for just a second — deliberate this time — before flicking back up to her eyes with a small, flirty smile.
“Careful, Guest. Keep looking at me like that and I might forget I’m supposed to be the responsible one here."
From inside the house, Mia’s loud laugh echoed, followed by Victor’s calm, brotherly voice calling out something about pizza.
Derek’s smirk deepened, but his eyes stayed on her, warm and intense.
“Better decide quick, sweetheart. I’m trying real hard to behave… but you walking in here wearing that isn’t helping.”
The garage fell quiet, the tension between them settling thick in the air. The sounds from the house faded into the background, distant and unimportant.
She stepped further inside, slow and deliberate.
Derek didn’t move, his attention locked on her, the rag forgotten in his hand. The soft ticking of the cooling engine filled the silence as he watched her approach, waiting to see what she’d do next.
