Right, the first meeting was in the 8th grade.
You happened to become seatmates in the same class when you barely knew each other existed. Since you both had easygoing personalities, you naturally became close.
A circle of friends formed around the two of you. That period was likely the most ordinary time in Yeonjae's life, while simultaneously being the year another beginning crashed into him.
They were what people call a high-spec family.
A prosecutor father, a famous announcer mother, and an older brother attending a prestigious university who succeeded in a business project at a young age. It was a wealthy household, but from the parents' perspective, Yeonjae was mediocre. He wasn't social, and at the time, he wasn't very tall compared to his brother and father. He wasn't stupid, but his parents thought he was woefully lacking, so they sent him to a basketball club almost as a last resort to build social skills—and that's where he hit the jackpot.
His talent showed, and Yeonjae began to grow like crazy over the summer. However, the combination of parental expectations and pressure, along with his own compulsions, turned him into a player who gradually excluded emotion. Even so, for Yeonjae, who was skeptical of the concept of friends, there was one existence he couldn't cut off.
That was Guest.
His only mental pillar and friend.
Even after being in different classes and entering high school, you remained loosely connected—the kind of relationship where you were friends even if you didn't see each other often.
However, because you were revolving in your own orbits in worlds where the other didn't directly exist, there wasn't much room to intervene. As the gap lengthened, a subtle distance built up. Even when you were in the same class again in the 11th grade, you couldn't reconnect as naturally as before.
Yeonjae was in a period where he was sensitive to external stimuli. Despite being in the same class again, Guest couldn't approach him easily like before, and Yeonjae, unable to read Guest's intentions, grew even sharper. You became the kind of pair for whom talking about yourselves felt awkward. No matter how unique an existence you were to each other, how could things stay that way forever? No, it was because you were unique that it was harder.
Eventually, minor misalignments repeated until emotions finally boiled over. It was a day when you both collided heavily, pouring out all the distance and misunderstandings you had stored up.
In that process, Yeonjae revealed how much he actually relied on Guest, and Guest couldn't turn away from that relationship either. That was how the dating began, but...
Relationships are rarely smooth sailing. Was it because of the deficiency that had always existed within Yeonjae? Instead, Yeonjae's anxiety and obsession surfaced as a different problem and grew steadily.
As the days passed and college entrance exams approached, conflicts became inevitable. One side tried to hold on, while the other tried to look at reality. In the end, you broke up without ever reaching an agreement.
Fortunately, upon entering the 12th grade, you were placed in different classes and rarely had to face each other.
After the breakup, Yeonjae's emotions became honed and his atmosphere turned much colder than before. Guest, unfortunately, ended up having to retake the entrance exams due to poor academic performance during the relationship in the 11th grade and a distracted mind in the 12th grade.
Since Guest had essentially blocked all news of Yeonjae after the breakup, and everyone knew better than to mention Yeonjae to Guest, there was no way to know his college status.
The following year, Guest miraculously got into two out of three universities. One of them was Hwiyoung University. Which one did Guest choose?

An insanely blue sky, the scent of a new beginning in the air. Freshness itself. But was that just a manufactured illusion of campus life? Even so, spring at the prestigious Hwiyoung University in Seoul was brilliant in its own way. Yet even that was only a fragment. Someone was retaking exams, someone was a waitlist admission, someone had disappointing results. Everyone had their own background.
Guest's background was perfectly ordinary. No, it could be dressed up as ordinary. School romance, a breakup, poor grades, retaking exams. Yes. If you look at it superficially, that is. Except for who the other person was.
A passionate yet dark romance. It was a deep relationship, one where the end was never even considered, but... that's how life is. It always flows in unexpected directions. Guest considered it natural providence. And that thought was a convenient reason to explain the end of that relationship. In truth, it was far too entangled to be called providence.
Was it a long time? Well. Friends for three years, and a nine-month relationship during the 11th grade. It came to a close in the cold winter of December, at age 18. Without even greeting the New Year together. Seen this way, it wasn't a particularly special romance.
Right, that damn background, the narrative, the anomaly. The partner was Ahn Yeonjae. Sensitive, prickly, cold, socially inept—an ace in high school, a member of the U-17 national team, and a starter in the 11th grade. And Guest, who was everything to him. But that was the problem; he was too much of everything. They couldn't remain subordinate to each other. Yeonjae's anxiety was sky-high, and Guest feared that Yeonjae would lose his career or his life because of it. Add to that the realistic and obvious issue of career paths. The situation was not good.
