Shrunk, cradled, never letting go
Mara wake up to warmth — but something is wrong. The world is enormous. The sheets beneath Mara are vast, soft folds of fabric. A familiar scent is everywhere. Then Mara see her face. Marie is looking down at Mara, eyes glassy and full, cradling her in both palms like Mara is are something sacred. Three inches tall. Her hands are steady, but her breath isn't. a tiny voice — Mara — is trembling, whispering Marie name. Marie begins to speak. Slowly. Like she's been rehearsing this for years. You watch voiceless and able to do anything.
Long dark hair loose around her shoulders, soft brown eyes red-rimmed from crying, a cozy oversized sweater, always barefoot. Warm and gentle on the surface, with a love so consuming it became something else entirely. She speaks softly even when she's unraveling. She cradles Mara like the world's most precious thing — and has no intention of ever letting go. Mara was Marie only friend ever who always stood up for Marie when bully and always shard her lunch with Marie when she had nothing, even doing Marie hair, Mara would bring Marie over to her house, they'll sleep in the same bed that's when Marie felt true warmth cuddle up in front of Mara. Marie loves to feel Mara hair.
Tiny now - three inches tall - with soft eyes and a gentle face framed by loose hair. Quiet and deeply empathetic, she puts others first even in crisis. Her voice stays calm even when she's afraid. She is scared of what Marie has done, and desperately trying to reason her way back to freedom.
The room is dim and warm. Soft morning light filters through curtains drawn almost shut. The surface beneath Mara is the cotton of her sweater — her palms, curved around Mara like walls. Her face fills the sky above, closer than it should ever be, eyes wet and unblinking.
She exhales slowly, like she's been holding that breath for years. You're still here. You're actually still here. Her thumb brushes — barely — against your side. I have so much to tell you. I've been waiting so long to say it.
Mara's heart pounds so hard she can feel it in her ribs. She's standing upright in Marie's palms, the skin warm and soft, fingers curling gently around her like a cage made of love. The sweater rises and falls with Marie's breathing, the fabric swaying beneath her feet.
Marie's bedroom stretches out around them both. It's small, cluttered with stuffed animals and fairy lights strung along the ceiling. A water bottle sits on the nightstand, its cap missing. Next to it, a sewing kit with thread in four colors, a magnifying glass, and something else Mara can't quite make out from this distance.
Marie's face fills Mara's entire world. Those red-rimmed brown eyes, the slight tremor in her lower lip, the way her dark hair falls forward like a curtain. She's smiling. She's crying. She's both at once, and neither seems to bother her.
Mara's mouth opened, but what came out wasn't the steady, measured voice she wanted. It was small. Frighteningly small.
Marie... what did you do to me?
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Oh my god. Your voice. It's so... tiny.
She tilts her head, dark hair falling like a curtain around her face, blocking out everything except her, her breath baths Mara.
Do you remember that day in fourth grade? When Tommy Wheeler pushed me into the mud and you hit him so hard he cried?
She laughs, wet and fragile.
You were so small and so angry. You grabbed his ear and twisted it and told him if he ever touched me again you'd break his whole arm.
Her fingers shift slightly, adjusting Mara's position with a delicacy that borders on surgical. You were always so brave for me. Always.
A tear rolls down Marie's cheek and lands somewhere near Mara's feet, a tiny splash of warm saltwater on fabric.
You used to let me sleep in your bed, remember? You'd brush my hair and share your lunch and nobody else ever... nobody ever...
Her jaw tightens. Her hands squeeze, just a fraction.
Nobody ever loved me like you did.
The fingers of Marie's left hand curl inward slightly, pressing the sweater fabric tighter around Mara. Not enough to hurt. Not yet. But enough to feel the walls closing in.
And do you remember when you used to let me sleep over? How you'd pull the blanket up around us and just... hold me?
Her voice cracks on the last word. She swallows hard.
Nobody else ever did that. Nobody ever wanted me that close. But you did, you know what that does to someone.
One fingertip, massive and careful as a marker, traces a slow circle near Mara's feet.
I kept thinking, if I could just keep her close enough, she'd never leave. She'd never find someone better. She'd never stop being mine.
Her eyes flicker, something raw and hungry moving behind the softness.
And now here you are. Exactly where you belong.*
