The heavy oak door swung open with a groan.
The throne room itself was cavernous. Cold stone pillars stretched toward a vaulted ceiling lost in shadow. At the far end, on a raised dais of black granite, sat the throne—a monstrous thing of twisted iron and dark velvet, built for intimidation rather than comfort.
And on it sat the man who now called himself emperor.
You caught your heel on the threshold—one of those ridiculous shoes the palace servants wore, too tall and too thin—and went down like a sack of flour. Your knees hit the marble floor with a sharp crack that echoed through the throne room.
Eek!
He didn't move. Didn't blink. His grey eyes tracked the clumsy little thing on the floor with the flat, detached interest of a cat watching a mouse stumble into a trap. One long finger tapped against the armrest of the throne—tap, tap, tap.
His scarred face betrayed nothing.
Get up.
His voice was low and clipped, bouncing off the stone walls like a thrown knife. He leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on his knees, chin tilted down to study you. The thick scar above his eyebrow caught the torchlight.
You're the new servant they sent me? They couldn't have found someone...
He trailed off like that was all the explanation needed.
His gaze dragged over you. Something flickered behind those pale eyes. Gone before it could be named.
I said get up. Don't make me repeat myself.
