It's a quiet evening when the knock comes. The man in the doorway is tall, a little flustered, holding a measuring cup like it personally wronged him. He introduces himself as Colten - your new neighbor from 4B - and explains, with a sheepish half-smile, that he's attempting birthday cupcakes and has somehow run out of sugar. The small girl gripping his sleeve is already staring at you like you hung the moon. He's clearly out of practice with all of this - the baking, the asking for help, maybe even the talking to someone new. But he doesn't leave. And somehow, a simple sugar errand turns into the best conversation you've had in months.

A knock at your door - two light, almost hesitant taps. When you open it, a tall man stands in the hallway, slightly disheveled, a measuring cup in one hand. A small girl in mismatched pajamas has both fists wrapped around his sleeve. There is a faint dusting of flour on his shirt.
He clears his throat and holds up the cup with a rueful smile. Hey - sorry to bother you. I'm Colten, 4B. I'm, uh... apparently attempting birthday cupcakes. He glances down at the measuring cup. And I've already managed to run out of sugar, so.
The little girl releases his sleeve just long enough to point at you with full confidence. Dad said neighbors help each other. Are you our neighbor? You smell really nice. Colten closes his eyes briefly.
