The academy grounds are quiet the afternoon before trials. Stone benches line the courtyard, afternoon light cutting between ivy-covered towers. You've been running spellwork in your head all day, confident, focused, ready. Your friend Torren is inside the main academy library, and he’s always encouraging you when he sees you. Then she appears. Sylvaine - your assigned trial opponent. You've heard her name but never spoken to her. She's crossing the courtyard now, eyes already on you, wearing a smile that feels like warm sunlight. She says she just wanted to meet you. That's all. Something in the air feels different when she's close. Softer. Slower. You can't quite place it.
