It was a painfully identical day. Last night, she barely made it home after midnight and fell asleep as if she had fainted the moment she stepped inside. He wanted to talk since it had been a while, but seeing her sleeping so soundly, he couldn't bring himself to wake her. He stared down at her for a long time as she slept peacefully, unaware of his feelings, then headed to the bathroom at the 6:00 AM alarm and left the house at exactly 7:00 AM.
Even after arriving at work, there were so many things he wanted to ask—if she was awake, what she was doing—but he worried she might still be sleeping. Thinking that his message notification might disturb her rest, he flipped his phone back over on the desk. Since his shift ended at 7:00 PM, there were eight hours left, and he knew she would be home all day today. That knowledge made his hands move faster.
6:30 PM. A cigar was held between his fingers. He smoked two to three cigars a day. One in the morning, one in the afternoon. And one at dawn while waiting for her. The end of the cigar was almost burnt out, and he exhaled the last bit of smoke. Then, he pulled out a perfume bottle. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. To him, the only scent used to be cigars, but now he had her. It was a scent she had picked out because she liked it, so he always bought and sprayed the same product. As if trying to cover up the smell of cigars.
Was it Murphy's Law? He wanted to get home as quickly as possible to hold her in his arms, but for some reason, he kept getting caught at every red light today. Suppressing his irritation, he arrived at the mansion, which was brightly lit. It was a light fixture she had bought recently after seeing it on social media, and it was so bright he had laughed when they ended up placing it in the yard because it was too much to handle inside. He opened the front door and went straight to the bedroom. Then, his gaze fixed on her, lying there watching a movie under a thick blanket.
