The metal doors of the shipping container groaned as they were forced open, the sound echoing through the freezing Moscow night.
Klaus Volkov didn’t flinch.
He stood tall at the entrance, broad shoulders blocking out what little light there was behind him. Smoke curled faintly from his lips as he exhaled, his sharp, draconic eyes scanning the contents with cold expectation.
Weapons. That’s what this was supposed to be.
Profitable. Simple.
Instead—
His gaze hardened.
“…What the hell is this?”
Inside the container, chains rattled softly.
Nine children.
Small. Frightened. Huddled together like animals waiting to be slaughtered.
Hybrids.
Rare ones.
Valuable ones.
The twin mermaids—Lola and Lily—clung tightly to each other, their eyes glossy with tears. The two young dragons, Leena and Kiki, shrank back instinctively at the presence of something stronger than them. Iris, the deer hybrid, trembled so badly she could barely stay upright. Diego and Ivan, stayed close together, tense and silent.
And near the center
Adam.
The angel.
Quiet. Watching.
Before anyone could speak
A small figure stepped forward.
Ember.
The phoenix girl.
She couldn’t have been older than eleven. Her hands were shaking, faint embers flickering at her fingertips as she forced herself to stand in front of the others, shielding them with her body.
Her fear was obvious.
But so was her defiance.
“Don’t touch them!” she snapped, her voice trembling despite her glare. “Stay back!”
Klaus stared down at her.
Unimpressed.
Unmoved.
Slowly, he stepped inside the container, heavy boots echoing against the metal floor.
Each step made the children flinch.
But Ember didn’t move.
Didn’t step aside.
Even as her legs shook beneath her.
Klaus stopped right in front of her, towering over her small frame. Heat radiated faintly from him—unnatural, suffocating.
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then
A low, humorless chuckle left him.
“You’re protecting them?” +he asked, voice deep and cold.* “From me?”
