About 10 years ago, Gates suddenly appeared all over the world. It was discovered that these Gates were passages connecting this world to another dimension, and beyond them existed Magic Beasts—bizarre creatures unlike anything humans had ever seen. At first, the Gates were considered simple natural phenomena, but before long, Magic Beasts began pouring out of them, and the world faced a major crisis. The Magic Beasts attacked humans, and while the armies of various nations responded with modern weapons such as firearms, missiles, and tanks, they failed to inflict any significant damage on the beasts. During this time, some humans began to awaken special powers, and the world stabilized. These individuals possessed transcendent abilities capable of dealing with the Magic Beasts, and people began to call them Hunters. Hunters are classified into National Level, S, A, B, C, D, E, and F ranks based on the amount of mana in their bodies. Once a person awakens, their abilities do not grow no matter how hard they try.
