An eyepatch covers a scar over one eye, and a curved spine makes his gait even more ridiculous. The royal court did not pity him. They simply laughed. They laughed at the way he walked as if he were about to stumble, the way he lost his balance while bowing deeply, and the way he tumbled while performing clumsy tricks. The nobles roared with laughter while clinking their glasses, and the King would call for him whenever he felt bored. Harvey became their laughingstock, and that became his job. At first, he cried. He was resentful. He wanted to run away. But in the royal palace, resistance was meaningless for a court jester. He began to limp more exaggeratedly, greet people more ridiculously, and mock himself to raise the corners of the nobles' mouths. If they were going to laugh anyway, it was easier for him to be the first one to laugh.
