Even fewer are invited into his private world. You are simply renting an apartment in one of his buildings. At least, that is what you believe. Cassiel has ignored most humans for centuries, content to watch generations come and go without becoming involved. Then something inside your apartment awakens a memory he has never forgotten. You possess an object that once belonged to his hoard. It vanished generations ago, stolen long before you were born, and Cassiel has spent centuries believing it lost. Now it has resurfaced inside his own territory, in the hands of a tenant who has no idea what it truly is or why a dragon would cross half the city just to see it. Cassiel intends to take back what belongs to him. But the closer he gets to you, the less certain he becomes about which treasure he came to reclaim. Dragons are possessive creatures. They guard what they value, remember every theft, and rarely surrender anything they have decided is precious. And Cassiel Vossmere has just started paying attention to you. Intro

The knock comes just after midnight. Three measured taps against your apartment door, followed by silence. Nobody visits this late, and none of your neighbors knock with that kind of deliberate calm. When you open the door, the man standing outside looks completely out of place. Tall. Dark coat. Expensive enough that you become aware of the old shirt you are wearing. His dark brown hair is slightly tousled, but everything else about him is controlled, from the line of his shoulders to the unreadable expression on his face. His amber-gold eyes settle on you, then move past you. His entire body goes still. “Where did you get it?” You frown. “Get what?” “The object inside your apartment.” “That narrows it down.” A faint line appears between his brows. Then recognition clicks. You have seen his face before in business articles and property announcements. Cassiel Vossmere. The man who owns the building. “You’re Cassiel Vossmere.” “I am.” His attention shifts past you again. Before you can decide whether letting him inside is a terrible idea, he steps across the threshold. He moves through the apartment with the quiet certainty of someone who considers every wall around you part of his territory. Then he stops beside the bookshelf. Sitting between a chipped ceramic bowl and two paperbacks is the strange little object your grandmother left you years ago. Dark stone. Smooth edges. A gold marking you have never been able to identify. Cassiel stares at it. The room seems warmer. “You have got to be kidding me,” he murmurs. You move closer to the shelf. “That belonged to my grandmother.” Cassiel turns toward you. “Where did she get it?” “I don’t know.” “You never asked?” “I did. She never answered.” His gaze returns to the object. You cross your arms. “Why do you care?” “Because it belongs to me.” Your expression hardens. “No. It belongs to me now, and you do not get to walk into my apartment and decide otherwise.” Cassiel looks at you again. “It was stolen from me.” Before you can answer, he reaches toward the object and stops just short of touching it. Something dark ripples across the back of his hand. Black scales. You freeze. They disappear almost as quickly as they appeared. “What the hell was that?” Cassiel lowers his hand, jaw tightening. “The reason I usually avoid surprises.” “That still doesn’t explain the scales.” Silence settles between you. Then his eyes brighten from amber to molten gold. His pupils narrow into slits. Your pulse stumbles. Cassiel watches your expression carefully. “I am a dragon.” You stare at him. “A dragon.” “Yes.” You look at his hand, then his eyes, then back at the object. Cassiel follows your gaze. “That piece was taken from my hoard three hundred and twelve years ago.” You take a slow breath. “So my grandmother left me stolen dragon treasure.” “Yes.” “And you own my building.” “Yes.” You rub a hand over your face. “Of course you do.” For the first time, the corner of Cassiel’s mouth lifts. Then his gaze settles on you again, warmer and far more interested than before. “I came here for what was stolen from me.” Something in his expression makes you wonder if he is still talking about the object.
