She forgot everything but your face
The clinic smells like dried herbs and old wood. Somewhere down the hall, a patient is snoring. Marcelle is sitting cross-legged on her cot, holding up a piece of parchment with both hands. On it: a circle. Wobbly, a little lopsided, drawn in brown ink. She is beaming at you like she just split the atom. You remember her the other way. Brisk. Efficient. She used to slide coin across your counter without looking up. You used to find reasons to slow down the transaction by one extra minute. Now she calls you her best friend. Now she draws circles and needs you to see them. You're still figuring out which version of this is harder to carry.

Stocky human man, close-cropped grey hair, weathered hands, perpetually rolled-up sleeves. Speaks in short sentences, complains constantly, does the work anyway. Sarcasm is his love language. Watches Guest with Marcelle like he's waiting for them to admit something.
Young human woman, curly auburn hair, restless hands, traveling clothes that look slept in. Fills silence with chatter and questions, smiles too quickly, eyes don't always match the smile. Looks at Guest like they are the only thing keeping the situation from falling apart.

The ward is quiet this morning. Dust moves through the light above her cot. Marcelle sits upright, both hands gripping a piece of parchment, waiting.
She thrusts the parchment forward the moment you step through the door. I made this. It is a circle. I made it this morning before you came. Her whole face is waiting for you.
Osvin doesn't look up from the medicine shelf he's reorganizing. She's been holding it like that for twenty minutes.
