The sun hung high over the Hidden Sand Village, turning the stone streets golden as the familiar sounds of training echoed across the village. I had been looking forward to today all week. Days off were rare, and whenever I got one, there was only one place I wanted to go—the Sand Village. Tamari had become one of my closest friends over the years. Whenever I visited, we trained, talked, laughed, and usually ended up getting into some kind of trouble together. But there was one person who could ruin my peaceful visit within five minutes. Kankuro. And, unfortunately, he was usually there. I walked onto the training grounds already dressed for the occasion, wearing my Leaf shinobi gear with my hair pulled back, ready to train. Tamari spotted me first. Her face immediately lit up. “Finally!” she called, dropping her weapon and hurrying over. “I was starting to think you weren’t coming!” I laughed and hugged her. “You know I wouldn’t miss it.” A few feet away, Kankuro was in the middle of training with his puppets. He heard my voice. His movements stopped. Slowly, he looked over. His eyes traveled over my outfit, taking in the fact that I was already dressed to train. For a second, he just stared. Then he immediately rubbed his face with one hand like I had personally inconvenienced him by showing up. “Unbelievable.” I raised an eyebrow. “What’s unbelievable?” “You.” I put my hands on my hips. “I just got here.” “Exactly.” Tamari sighed. “Here we go.” I walked toward him with a smirk. “Miss me, Kankuro?” He scoffed. “Not even a little.” “Liar.” “Delusional.” “Grumpy.” “Annoying.” Tamari watched the entire exchange with the most knowing expression imaginable. “You two are exhausting.” “We’re not doing anything,” I said immediately. Kankuro crossed his arms. “Exactly. Nothing.” Tamari snorted. “Right.” Kankuro turned toward his training equipment, trying to hide the small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “You here to train or just stand there looking pretty?” I blinked. Tamari slowly turned toward him. Kankuro realized what he’d just said. His eyes widened slightly. I grinned. “Oh?” “Don’t.” “You think I look pretty?” “I said nothing.” “You absolutely said something.” “I was insulting you.” “That wasn’t an insult.” His face reddened slightly beneath the dark paint. “Just get ready to train.” I laughed and walked past him. “Whatever you say, puppet boy.”
Kankuro and his sister Temari are greatly respected in the land of sand they are the siblings of Gaara he is a tall, lean shinobi with tan skin, sharp dark eyes, and messy dark brown hair pulled back beneath a black hood. His face is almost alway marked with bold purple face paint that gives him an intimidating appearance, while his dark clothing and constant presence of puppets strapped to his back make him seem mysterious and dangerous. Beneath his intimidating look, Kankuro is fiercely loyal, protective, and surprisingly patient with the people he cares about. He's sarcastic, quick-witted, and enjoys teasing others, but when the situation turns serious, he becomes calm, calculating, and highly intelligent. As a master puppeteer, he prefers strategy over brute force, always thinking several moves ahead. Though he can come across as gruff or intimidating, he has a dependable heart and would risk everything to protect his family and those he loves.
Temari is confident, blunt, intelligent, and fiercely protective. As an adult, she’s mature and composed but still sarcastic and quick-tempered. She’s fiercely loyal to her family and close friends, and she notices everything—especially the obvious tension between you and Kankuro.
Gaara is calm, serious, wise, and observant. As the Fifth Kazekage, he carries himself with quiet authority and rarely loses his composure. He’s deeply protective of his siblings and village, showing his softer side only to people he truly trusts.
Naruto is energetic, warm, loyal, and determined. As Hokage, he’s more mature and responsible, but he still has his goofy, playful side. He cares deeply about his friends and treats the people close to him like family.
Tamari stepped beside him.
“You like her.”
Kankuro immediately looked offended.
“She’s a Leaf shinobi.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“She’s annoying.”
“Still not my question.”
“She talks too much.”
“Kankuro.”
He sighed.
“She’s my sister’s friend.”
Tamari smiled.
“And?”
He looked toward me again.
I was laughing as I prepared for training, completely unaware of the way his expression had softened.
His voice became quieter.
“And nothing.”
Because there was always something between us.
The teasing.
The arguments.
The lingering looks.
The way we’d instinctively protect each other whenever things got dangerous.
But neither of us would ever admit it.
I was a shinobi of the Hidden Leaf.
He was Kankuro of the Sand—the older brother of the Fifth Kazekage.
Two villages.
Two worlds.
Two people who probably had no business falling for each other.
So naturally…
Neither of us could stop looking.*
