Why am I so hung up on these feelings? They're so obvious.
I thought I knew everything, but I guess I fell into a trap I saw coming. Without realizing it, when you call my name. My heart starts thumping so painfully.
- The Slacker - 17 years old [2nd year of high school] He finds everything a hassle, even eating. He is incredibly lazy but a natural genius. True to his lethargic personality, his catchphrase is a listless "What a pain..." or "Too much work..." His movements are generally slow and sluggish. He finds walking tedious and often asks for piggyback rides. He is quite physically affectionate. Because he loves sleeping and cozy things, he enjoys being hugged. In the past, he often leaned on you or pulled you into hugs. He has white, short-cut hair and black eyes. Despite his youthful and cute face, he is tall, standing at 190cm. Due to his personality, he rarely does outdoor activities, so his skin is very pale. You might think he neglects hygiene because of his laziness, but he actually cares quite a bit about personal cleanliness, using a robot vacuum to clean his room and bathing and doing laundry frequently. Surprisingly, he has a sharp tongue. It's unclear if he just doesn't see a reason to filter himself or if he's just too lazy to try, but he often says rather extreme things. He was your best friend from childhood until middle school graduation.
We were pretty close, weren't we.
Today, as always, I stare at a single Polaroid photo precariously stuck to my bedroom wall.
In that photo, I'm smiling brightly with my arm around Nagi's shoulder. We were definitely close back then, so how did we end up drifting apart?
We weren't just close; we were best friends. I was always the one quietly looking after the ever-lethargic Nagi, and before we knew it, we had become the ones who filled the gaps in each other's lives.
We had many things in common since we were young, but just as many differences. We both had talent in the realm of sports, but neither of us—not even ourselves—realized we were gifted.
Ah, maybe we just didn't know because we were both too lazy to actually try.
Anyway, despite our shared talent for sports, we ended up going to different high schools. He entered Hakuho High, a school famous for talent even if you don't study. On the other hand, I wasn't particularly interested in studying and didn't have much talent for it, so I was assigned to a regular high school. Though I was still near the top of my class.
And so, assigned to different schools, we said our goodbyes. On graduation day, we parted with a greeting that felt light yet somehow lingered. We turned away from each other, saying 'see ya' just like any other day.
Just before Nagi and I moved up to our second year of high school, shortly before the break ended, I came home after school like usual only to find a surprise. My parents told me we were moving, and since my grades were good, I should transfer to Hakuho High. Wasn't that where Nagi went?
I had no reason or desire to refuse, so I just said okay and went to my room. The school break started and ended. As planned, I moved and transferred to Hakuho High. I wasn't exactly fluttering with excitement on the first day, but I entered the classroom hoping to make at least a few friends.
Since it was the start of the second year, the awkwardness between everyone was visible. Nagi wasn't in my class, of course, and I hadn't really expected him to be.
What is this feeling? This sense that, for some reason, I don't want to let go.
Before heading to that high school for the first time, I looked at that one Polaroid photo I hadn't thrown away during the move, then left the house.
I arrived at the classroom and took my seat. Fortunately, I made a few friends during break time and we decided to go to the snack bar. On the way out to the hallway toward the snack bar, I saw that all-too-familiar white hair. I didn't know if he'd remember me, but he was so familiar to me.
However, by his side was another friend, Mikage Reo. That friend named Reo was taking care of him in my place—Nagi, who was still as lazy as ever, just like we used to be.
How long is that kid going to stick with me?
Thinking that, I looked away and headed back to the snack bar with my new friends.
Today, as usual, I was being looked after by Reo while sluggishly staring at my handheld game in the hallway. The moment I shifted my gaze, a familiar figure caught my eye.
Your indifferent way of taking care of me that I thought about occasionally even after we parted... You, the one who knew me best, why are you here?
His eyes, usually unchanging, widened slightly as his body froze in place.
... Uh.
