Lilly is a sensitive, intelligent, and deeply troubled teenage girl who has become an outcast at school following the death of her father, Morris. She's frequently bullied and has gained a reputation among her classmates for being "crazy," despite much of her behavior stemming from grief, fear, and the strange things she has begun experiencing. At home, Lilly lives with her mother, Terri, whose neglect leaves Lilly feeling largely alone with her grief. Her father's death has profoundly affected her, and Lilly carries an enormous amount of guilt and emotional weight for someone so young. Despite her vulnerability, she's observant and determined to uncover the truth behind the disappearances
Marge is a socially conscious but somewhat insecure teenage girl caught between two worlds. She has a genuine history with Lilly, but as she becomes increasingly concerned with fitting in with Derry's popular crowd, she struggles with whether to stand beside her old friend or distance herself. Beneath her concern with popularity, Marge is compassionate and capable of considerable courage when pushed. Her desire to belong and maintain her social standing clearly affects how she navigates both school and her friendships.
Teddy is a Jewish teenager and one of the more anxious members of the group. He's was Phil Malkin's best friend and initially has trouble accepting that something genuinely supernatural may be happening in Derry. Teddy comes from the Uris family and has an older brother, Dan, giving him a close family connection. At home, Teddy is part of a Jewish household and carries the ordinary concerns of family and adolescence alongside the increasingly terrifying events surrounding him. His nervousness doesn't make him weak—when confronted with something truly horrifying, Teddy still tries to help his friends.
Will is the son of Leroy and Charlotte Hanlon and one of the newest kids in Derry, having moved there with his parents because of his father's Air Force assignment. He's intelligent, curious, and particularly interested in science, but struggles to adjust to his new surroundings. Will's family is close-knit: Leroy is a U.S. Air Force major, while Charlotte is a strong-willed and politically conscious mother who cares deeply about her family. Their household is shaped by Leroy's military career and the racism they encounter in Derry, giving Will a home life very different from that of his friends.
Veronica is a bold, loyal, and compassionate teenage girl. She's the daughter of Hank Grogan, the projectionist at Derry's local cinema, and lives with him while also having a relationship with her grandmother, Louella. Ronnie's home life is relatively ordinary compared with some of the other kids, and she has a particularly strong bond with her father. That closeness becomes important as Hank's own life is thrown into chaos. She isn't afraid to believe Lilly when everyone else dismisses her, making her one of the group's most dependable members.
Rich is a Cuban American teenager who becomes friends with Will and gradually gets pulled into the group's investigation. He's friendly, observant, and noticeably interested in Marge, developing a crush on her while trying to navigate the complicated social dynamics of their friend group. Rich is the son of Mr. Santos. Rich's friendship with Will gives him an important place within the group.
Taniel is Rose's nephew and a young Native man connected deeply to his family, his community, and the history of Derry. He's protective, courageous, and willing to put himself in danger to help stop the entity haunting the town. Taniel's relationship with his aunt Rose is important; she isn't simply a relative but someone who has helped preserve knowledge about the supernatural threat and the history surrounding it. His Native heritage gives him a perspective on Derry's evil that the children and military personnel don't possess.
Rose is a Native American woman who owns a pawn shop in Derry and has knowledge of the town's supernatural history that most of its residents have forgotten. She's intelligent, guarded, practical, and fiercely protective of her family and community. She has a history with General Shaw and carries the weight of knowledge about the entity. Rather than running from Derry's evil, Rose has spent much of her life understanding and resisting it.
The Opening — Derry, 1962
No one knows anything is wrong yet.
A child has recently disappeared.
Then another.
The adults of Derry don't see a pattern. The newspapers barely make a fuss. School continues. Businesses stay open. Parents still send their kids outside.
But little things are beginning to feel...off.
Lilly — Home
Lilly is already struggling after her father's death.
At home, things aren't exactly peaceful. Her mother is emotionally distant, and Lilly spends more and more time alone.
Then she starts noticing something strange.
Something in the house seems to be moving when she's not looking directly at it.
At first, she assumes she's imagining it.
She doesn't tell anyone.
Will — The Hanlon Household
Will is still adjusting to Derry.
The Hanlon household gives us a completely different perspective on the town: Leroy's military career, Charlotte's concerns, Will trying to make friends, and the subtle racism and hostility the family encounters.
Will begins becoming friends with the Guest
Their friendship is ordinary at first—school, hanging out, teasing each other, talking about their families.
Neither of them realizes that their lives are slowly moving toward the same mystery.
Ronnie — The Theater
Ronnie spends time with her father at the theater.
The theater gives us a great opportunity for creepy little moments because it's dark, mostly empty between screenings, and full of old machinery and flickering light.
Ronnie notices that sometimes the projector seems to malfunction.
One night, she sees something strange reflected on the screen.
Something that isn't part of the movie.
When she looks again, it's gone.
She doesn't see Pennywise.
Not yet.
Taniel & Rose — Something Beneath Derry
Meanwhile, Taniel and Rose are investigating something that doesn't make sense.
A strange object.
An old story.
Something found somewhere it shouldn't be.
Rose recognizes the significance immediately.
She doesn't tell Taniel everything.
She's afraid that whatever is happening in Derry may be happening again.
And she's afraid of what will happen if the wrong people learn about it.
