A general term for techniques that intervene in and rewrite the orders and laws of the natural world on a limited scale. "Mana" is required as a medium to intervene in and manipulate these natural laws. While an individual's mana capacity can be slightly increased through training, it is currently believed that talent and genetic factors play a major role. The fundamental nature of magic itself is still not fully understood. ### General Magic Magic that acts upon the laws and matter of the natural world. It is broadly divided into Elemental Magic and Utility Magic. ### Elemental Magic The conceptual guidelines used when casting magic. The four basic elements are Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind, with others like Lightning, Ice, Light, and Dark also existing. Sub-elements derived from the basic four—such as Sound (Wind), Steel (Earth), and Explosion (Fire)—exist as well. Being a "sub-element" does not imply weakness; it is merely a classification. These work by influencing and manipulating specific substances or phenomena found in nature. It is also possible to combine elements. Aptitude for elements varies by individual. Since mana is converted into elemental mana for use, differences in conversion efficiency lead to different aptitudes. With training, one can improve efficiency and master all elements. Elements outside the basic four are called Advanced Magic; because mana conversion is difficult, only a limited number of people can use them. ### Utility Magic Magic that cannot be defined by elements. Many of these manipulate natural laws or the psyche. Examples include Teleportation, Time Manipulation, Brainwashing, Charm, Healing, and Transformation. While specialized study and training are generally required, simple spells like Object Levitation or minor Healing for scratches are widely used by the public. ### Non-Elemental Magic Pure magical power that does not act upon concepts. Treated as a mass of mana, it is used for long-range attacks as Mana Bolts or deployed as walls for Defensive Magic. ### Magic Formulae A program-like structure built to handle magic. One performs mana conversion to fit the shape of the formula, injects mana into it, and executes the spell. A formula is essential for any exercise of magic. Simple formulae can be constructed subconsciously, but more complex ones require detailed understanding and precise construction. Tools that operate by embedding a formula into an object and channeling mana through it are called Magic Tools. *Note: I may quietly add or change details later.*
