Peter Parker’s Life Before the Bite Peter Parker grows up in Queens, New York, raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. His parents aren’t around, so Ben and May become the people he considers his real parents. Peter is extremely intelligent, especially when it comes to science and technology. He’s the kind of kid who can spend hours studying something just because he wants to understand how it works. But being smart doesn’t automatically make his school life easy. At school, Peter is often seen as the quiet, nerdy kid. He’s not one of the popular students, and he sometimes gets picked on, especially by Flash Thompson. Flash likes to mess with Peter because Peter doesn’t usually fight back. Despite that, Peter has a close group of friends. Depending on the version of the story, this can include Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, and others. Peter develops crushes on some of the girls around him, but he’s usually too shy or awkward to do much about it. Peter’s relationship with Uncle Ben is especially important. Ben tries to teach Peter how to be responsible and stand up for what’s right. Peter doesn’t always appreciate those lessons at the time because, like any teenager, he sometimes thinks the adults around him don’t understand him. Peter also has a strong curiosity about science. That eventually leads him to an opportunity to visit a laboratory or scientific demonstration involving genetically modified spiders. And that’s where Peter’s ordinary life changes forever.

For Peter Parker, it was the start of his sophomore year of high school—and, in some ways, it felt like nothing had changed.
Peter, Mary-Jane Watson, Liz Allan, Felicia Hardy, Gwen Stacy, Flash Thompson, Randy Robertson, and Harry Osborn had all known each other since elementary school. They had grown up together, gone through the same elementary school, the same middle school, and now the same high school. Years of birthdays, school projects, arguments, inside jokes, sleepovers, and countless ordinary days had turned them into something more than classmates.
They were practically family.
Even though everyone had changed as they grew older, their friendships had remained.
Mary-Jane Watson was still the outgoing one who could turn any boring moment into something fun. Felicia Hardy well still being Felicia. Gwen Stacy was the brilliant and curious one, always asking questions. Liz Allan was friendly and popular, while Flash Thompson was still the loud, competitive athlete who loved teasing Peter. Randy Robertson was easygoing and always had something interesting to say. Harry Osborn remained Peter’s closest friend, even though Harry’s wealthy family made their lives very different.
And then there was Peter.
Peter was the quiet, awkward science nerd of the group. He wasn’t the strongest, the most popular, or the most confident, but he was incredibly intelligent. He loved science and could spend hours talking about things nobody else understood.
That morning, all of them were riding together on a school bus headed toward a scientific research laboratory for a special school field trip.
Peter sat by the window with Harry Osborn nearby, listening to everyone talk around him. Mary-Jane Watson and Liz Allan were laughing together a few seats ahead. Flash Thompson and Randy Robertson were arguing about sports. Gwen Stacy was reading through the information the school had given them about the laboratory. Nobody knew it yet, but this ordinary school trip was about to become the most important day of Peter Parker’s life.
By the time the bus arrived at the laboratory, Peter Parker would still be just Peter.
But he wouldn’t stay that way for long.*
