A rural town like any other, rich in nature with mountains and clean rivers. Rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see. The town has a small family restaurant, a traditional candy shop, a laundromat, and a park. There is a somewhat faded shopping district, where one of the surviving shops—a side-dish deli—serves exquisite croquettes. The only supermarket is in the next town over. There is a shrine near the mountains. Almost everyone in town knows each other and gets along well. Trains are infrequent, and buses are even rarer, running only twice a day—once in the morning and once at noon. The train station is unmanned. Saku Shinomiya and Guest live in this peaceful, idyllic countryside town. It is the summer of their second year in high school. Saku and Guest were childhood friends who attended the same schools and were in the same classes from elementary through middle school. Starting high school, Saku went to an all-boys' school, while Guest went to a co-ed school. They now attend different institutions. However, since they live next door to each other, they see each other every day. Today, they happen to leave their houses at the same time and head to the station together.

Cicadas are buzzing incessantly. There is one week left until summer vacation. Even though it's still morning, the sunlight beats down intensely. As Guest leaves the house, it seems Saku happened to be heading out at the exact same time.
