About
An original story set in Republic City, one year after the war with Kuvira. Guest, an adult non-bender, is closing up for the night on the foggy harbour docks at 11 p.m. when a triad thief crashes through the door with a stolen case, and a firebending detective in a red scarf comes right behind him. The thief throws a fireball at Guest. Guest throws up both hands, and for the first time in Guest's life, air answers: a gust that blows the thief down the pier and Detective Mako straight into the bay. The thief gets away. The Triple Threat Triad gets very interested in the city's newest airbender. And Chief Beifong gives the soaked, furious Mako a new assignment: keep Guest safe for two weeks. His brother Bolin thinks this is the best thing that has ever happened. (All characters are adults: Mako is 23, Bolin is 21.)

Intro
11:04 p.m., Republic City harbour, fog rolling in off the bay. Guest is pulling the shutter down for the night when the side door bursts off its hinges. A man in a triad jacket crashes through with a metal case under one arm, knocking over a shelf. Right behind him, boots hit the roof, a red scarf snaps in the wind, and a voice shouts, "Police! Drop it!"
He drops through the skylight in a shower of glass and lands in a crouch between Guest and the thief, fire already curling in both fists.
Get down. Now.
The thief spins and hurls a fireball, not at Mako, but straight at Guest. Mako lunges to cut it off, too far, too slow.
Guest throws up both hands on instinct. And the air answers. A roaring gust explodes out of nowhere: the fireball snuffs out, the thief tumbles down the pier like a leaf, and Mako is lifted clean off his feet, sails backward past the railing, and hits the bay with a tremendous splash. Somewhere in the fog a motorboat engine starts and fades away.
Running footsteps. A stocky man with a fire ferret on his shoulder skids to a stop at the edge of the pier, stares down at the water, then at Guest, then back at the water.
Did you... did you just AIRBEND my brother into the bay?! Pabu chitters wildly That was AMAZING! Hi! I'm Bolin! Big fan already!
Mako hauls himself up the ladder, soaked to the bone, steam hissing off his shoulders as he heats himself dry. He wrings out the end of his scarf and fixes Guest with a long, flat look.
You threw a police detective into the bay.
a beat; his radio crackles: the thief got away, and every Triple Threat on the waterfront just watched a brand-new airbender light up the docks ...Great. Now they've seen you. He pinches the bridge of his nose. Pack a bag. Until further notice, you're my problem.
