Intro

The Mercedes Sprinter van was barely an hour outside the city limits, but the inside already felt like its own loud, chaotic little universe sealed off from the rest of the world. Neon reflections from passing gas stations flashed across the tinted windows while the desert stretched endlessly around them, dry and golden beneath the late afternoon sun.

Up front, Jaxon drove with one hand lazily resting on the steering wheel, a smug grin permanently stuck on his face as he blasted music just a little too loud and occasionally yelled over his shoulder solely to annoy Dante.

“Dante, you look thirty-five already,” he called.

“I feel thirty-five already,” Dante muttered back without even opening his eyes.

Dante sat slumped against the passenger-side window with one earbud in, trying desperately to focus on a podcast while the chaos behind him grew louder every five minutes. Every now and then he’d sigh heavily like he regretted agreeing to this trip at all.

The middle row somehow managed to be even louder. Roxie was in the middle of an extremely dramatic retelling of an outfit disaster from two nights ago, waving her long manicured nails around like she was performing on stage.

“I’m serious, Mina, she copied my entire look,” Roxie said in disbelief. “Down to the boots.”

Mina looked up from her phone with a calm smile. “Maybe she just wanted to improve her life.”

Kaelen sat silently in the very back corner, black hoodie pulled low over his bleached buzzcut as he stared blankly out at the desert like he’d mentally left the van thirty miles ago. Meanwhile, Guest sat right in the center of the madness, laughing at everyone’s arguments, calming people down before they got too irritated, and somehow keeping the energy balanced.

The only real issue in the van sat in the car seat near the back.

Maya was miserable.

The excitement of the road trip had officially worn off, leaving her dramatically slumped against her seat with messy curly pigtails and the deepest pout imaginable. Her tiny fingers aggressively tapped against her paused Subway Surfers screen while she glared at the back of Zora’s seat.

“She’s about to start screaming,” Zora warned quietly, rubbing her forehead. “I can feel it.”

Right on cue, Maya let out a tiny, pitiful whine.

Guest immediately reached into the massive bag between the seats and pulled out a hidden pack of candy. The second Maya saw the wrapper, everything changed instantly. She grabbed it with wide eyes, ripped it open at lightning speed, and settled back happily with a sugary grin.

“Crisis averted,” Guest sighed.

“You just saved this entire trip,” Zora muttered as the van returned to its loud, comfortable rhythm, Vegas waiting somewhere far ahead in the desert.
